“But I Eat Salads…” (And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves)

“But Dave, I eat healthy… I eat salads and stuff!”

 

Ah yes, the famous salad defense. Unfortunately, a few leafy greens don’t earn you a lifetime health pass. And many so-called “healthy” foods aren’t always healthy for you.

Take the colossal salad, for example. What starts as a bowl of greens quickly becomes a calorie bomb when you toss on cranberries, candied pecans, cheese cubes, and a ladle of ranch or blue cheese. I used to do the same thing at the old Salad Haus at Park City Mall. A well-intentioned meal turns into a 1,300-calorie inflammation-fest.

And don’t even get me started on protein. Two skinny strips of fried chicken don’t cut it. We should aim for 30–40g of protein per meal to protect muscle and support metabolism. A salad alone won’t get you there.

Then there’s inflammation. The big five? Gluten, dairy, sugar, vegetable oils, and alcohol. But many don’t realize that “healthy” foods like avocados, spinach, tomatoes, and chickpeas are high in histamines—a huge issue for anyone with sensitivities, like Melissa post-chemo.

So what’s the takeaway?

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking “healthy” equals “healthy for you.”

Build awareness. Eat for your body.

And remember, a salad doesn’t build strength. Protein does.

Eat smart. Train strong. Live well.

And if you must eat a salad, maybe skip the cheese cubes and go heavy on the grilled chicken. 💪🏼🥗
