Mindset Monday: Getting Back on Track Is a Skill (And It Takes Practice)

Here we are—several weeks into the new year.

If you’re still feeling solid with your health and fitness habits, that’s awesome.

But history tells us something important:

This is also the time when many people start to slip.

And here’s the truth most people don’t talk about…

We all fall off. Perfect doesn’t exist.

The real skill isn’t staying perfect.

The skill is getting back on track.

And depending on where you are in your journey, that’s not always easy. I’m just being real with you.

Getting back on track takes practice.

Read that again.

Most people don’t think of it this way. They assume motivation should magically return, or that discipline should just “kick in.” But just like training a movement, building strength, or improving endurance—resetting your habits is a learned skill. The more you practice it, the better you get at it.

Where people get into trouble is with overcorrecting.

They slip up… then feel like they need to “make up for lost time.”

So they go extreme.

More workouts. Fewer calories. More rules.

And what happens?

It becomes harder to sustain.

They fall off again.

And now it feels even worse.

That cycle doesn’t build confidence—it erodes it.

Instead, have a solid plan.

Not a perfect one.

Not an extreme one.

Focus on one or two simple actions that move you in the right direction. Maybe it’s getting protein back on track. Maybe it’s daily walks. Maybe it’s just showing up again.

No overcorrecting. No punishment.

Just progress.

Remember—we’re in this for the long haul.

Slipping up isn’t failure.
