Fitness Challenges Are Great… Until They’re Not. Let’s Talk About It.

As a health and fitness coach, this is a tough one for me. I love to see people getting motivated and taking steps to improve their health. But some of the most popular fitness challenges? They leave me concerned.

Here’s why…

 

Extreme doesn’t work long-term.

Many of these programs—like 75 Hard—push people to overtrain, restrict food, and be perfect every single day. You might tolerate it for a while, but that doesn’t mean it’s sustainable. Too often, this leads to burnout, muscle loss, and a slower metabolism. That’s not the outcome anyone wants.

There’s no exit strategy.

Challenges have end dates. Life doesn’t. If you can’t keep it up forever, it’s not a lifestyle—it’s a sprint. And without a solid plan for what happens next, many people end up right back where they started… or worse.

The sales funnel is real.

Many of these challenges are designed to “capture” your email address and get you into their sales pipeline. It’s not necessarily bad—it’s business—but I prefer to be upfront about it. I’m not here to “capture” anything. If you need me, I’m here. No gimmicks. No pressure.

Failure feels personal.

The reported success rate of 75 Hard is less than 10%. What happens to the other 90%? Many feel like they’ve failed… again. And that’s not fair. You don’t fail because the plan isn’t sustainable. That’s on the plan, not you.

Now, I’m not saying there’s zero benefit to a challenge. In fact, it was a challenge back in 1999 that sparked my love for nutrition. But these programs should be a starting point, not the finish line.

If you’re crushing a challenge right now and loving it, I applaud you!
