Gym Etiquette 101: Unspoken Rules for Crushing Your Workout (Without Crushing Good Vibes)

It’s that time of year again—the New Year’s resolution rush! For many, this means stepping into a commercial gym for the first time. Whether you’re a seasoned lifter or a total newbie, it’s the perfect time to brush up on some gym etiquette—those written and unwritten rules that make the gym a welcoming and functional space for everyone.

First off, I’ve found the gym to be a very accepting place. At the end of the day, we’re all just trying to do a little better, right? But let’s be real: there are a few things worth calling out, and maybe even laughing about, when it comes to gym behavior.

1. Don’t Be Smelly.

This goes for both too little and too much scent. Shower before you come. And for the love of all things iron, ditch the cologne or perfume. I’m already gasping for air during my set—I don’t need to inhale your Drakkar Noir too.

2. Locker Room Conversations.

If you’re naked, please don’t try to strike up a chat. This is not the time or place for deep discussions.

3. Share Equipment.

Let others “work in” on a machine if you’re resting between sets. And if you work in with someone, be courteous—return the machine or weights to their setup after each of your sets.

4. Put Your Weights Away.

Seriously, this is Gym 101. Think of it as the final part of your workout. Nobody wants to clean up after you.

5. Wipe Your Sweat.

Simple. Effective. Don’t leave a puddle behind—this isn’t a Slip ’N Slide.

6. Don’t Drop the Weights.

No need for theatrics. Lift it, lower it, repeat.

7. Mid-Set Chatter? Don’t.

If someone’s mid-set, they’re in the zone. Let them finish before starting a conversation.

8. Don’t Hoard Equipment.

Setting up a 12-piece circuit in a busy gym? Not cool. Be considerate and adapt to the environment.

9. Be Nice (Especially to Older Folks).😉

Kindness costs nothing. Say hi. Offer a spot. Celebrate the fact that we’re all here, working to improve. And hey, older gym-goers have a wealth of knowledge to share. I’ve been training for decades, and I promise, I’ve got more to offer than the 25-year-old bro by the dumbbells, so feel free to ask… between my sets.

10. Keep Cameras in Check.

No locker room filming—ever. And if you’re recording on the gym floor, be mindful of others.

At the end of the day, the gym is a shared space, and we’re all there for the same reason: to improve, both physically and mentally. So, let’s lift each other up—literally and figuratively—and keep the vibes strong. 💪🏼
