Mastering the Skill of Exercise: A Lifelong Pursuit

Happy Mindset Monday! 😎

Recently, I talked about viewing exercises as “skills” to be improved over time, rather than focusing solely on the number on the scale. I was asked what specific skills should be focused on for certain exercises, and here’s my take: getting better at these skills is a lifelong pursuit.

 

Just like golf, where one lesson doesn’t perfect your drive, you’ll continually work on different aspects of exercises. The better you get, the more you’ll refine.

For any exercise, ask yourself:  

- Am I connecting with the right muscle groups?  

- Am I feeling it where I’m supposed to?  

- Am I mentally dialed in to give my best?  

- Is my core braced?  

- Are my feet grabbing into the floor, and are my knees aligned?  

- Is my spine in a straight line?  

- Is my breathing on point?  

- Am I avoiding any energy leaks in my form?  

These aren’t one-time checks – they’re skills you’ll practice over and over. The good news is, refining these skills won’t add time to your workout; it’ll make your workout more effective!

Even Tiger Woods has a coach and continues to work on his drive. Like him, we can always improve. And this is your health – a lifelong pursuit worth every effort.

Just like learning golf, no one masters it in one lesson or one month. Why should getting healthy be any different, especially if you’ve had 20-30 years of bad habits? That’s why having a coach matters!

Keep in mind that we’re all at different stages of this journey. Focus on the basics, and let’s figure out where you can get the biggest bang for your buck. It may not be perfecting a deadlift, but something as simple as starting your day with a glass of water and a walk.
