New Year, New YOU: How to Finally Make Resolutions Stick

New Year, New YOU: How to Finally Make Resolutions Stick

It’s that time of year again! Over 100 million Americans set New Year’s resolutions annually, but the stats are sobering:

  • 23% quit within the first week.
  • 64% abandon them within a month.
  • By year’s end, only 9% feel successful in achieving their goals.

That’s over 90 million people choosing excuses over results. Don’t be another statistic. Be the exception.

Here’s the key: Make your resolutions action-based, not results-based.

While many resolutions focus on weight loss, we can’t control exactly what the scale will do—especially in a specific timeframe. What we can control are the actions we take each day that lead us closer to our goals.

Start Small and Stay Consistent.

Extreme approaches don’t work. You might feel the urge to overhaul your entire routine overnight, but let’s be realistic: Running a “marathon” every day isn’t sustainable. Instead, pick one or two small actions you can improve upon, and focus on those.

Choose Habits You Can Maintain Forever.

Resolutions aren’t just about short-term results; they’re about creating a lifestyle. The goal is to build habits you can stick with, so your results last.

Here are a few examples:

  • New to fitness? Start the day with a glass of water, a brief walk, and a protein-rich breakfast like a veggie omelet with eggs and egg whites. This will help improve your insulin sensitivity and set the tone for your day.
  • Want to increase activity? If you’re walking 3,000 steps daily now, aim for 5,000. Build gradually toward 8–10,000 steps a day.
  • Ready for a challenge? Skip the scale and set a strength goal, like performing three unassisted pull-ups by April 1. This will shift your focus to getting stronger, which boosts metabolism and muscle mass—a win-win.

Bonus Tip: Find Your “WHY.”

Having a BIG reason behind your goals is the ultimate motivator. For me, it’s my grandson. I want to be healthy and strong so I can enjoy as many of his milestones as possible.

As they say, “How we do one thing is how we do everything.” If your health and fitness matter, make a plan. The same goes for your relationships, work, and faith.

Maybe your resolution for 2025 is this:

“I will start every day with water, a walk, and a protein-packed breakfast because my family depends on me.”

I’d love to hear your goals for 2025—drop them in the comments! And if you need guidance, I’m just a message away. Let’s make this your year! 🎉💪🏼
