The holiday season is upon us, and I couldn’t be more excited. Family, food, football—this time of year fills my heart with gratitude, especially as I experience the joy of seeing my grandson grow. These celebrations aren’t about chasing fitness goals for me. They’re about cherishing my loved ones and truly being present.
That said, I want to feel good during the holidays, not sluggish or regretful. While the season brings joy, it also brings the potential to overindulge, leaving many Americans with 6–10 extra pounds by New Year’s Day. My goal? To fully enjoy this time without derailing my health.
Here’s how I approach the season:
My Nonnegotiables
💥 Workouts: These always stay on the calendar.
💥 Steps: I aim to average 10,000 per day.
💥 Water: One gallon daily keeps me feeling great.
Melissa and I also plan around our holiday schedule. If we know we have events on Friday and Sunday, we might skip our usual Saturday date night for a cozy “date in.” Sometimes, we’ll even choose to skip alcohol on certain days—it’s all about balance.
“Day Of” Strategies
💥 Start Strong: My day begins with water, a walk, and a protein-packed breakfast. This keeps me feeling satiated and less likely to overindulge later.
💥 Metabolism in Action: Thanks to years of building my metabolism, I can enjoy those extra holiday treats without stressing over the scale. In fact, those calories help fuel muscle growth!
💥 Sleep Awareness: Good rest is crucial, so I keep an eye on things—like that extra cocktail—that could interfere with my sleep quality.
At the end of the day, my focus is on being present for my family. This season is about more than what’s on the table—it’s about the people around it.
