Surviving the Holidays Without Packing on the Pounds!

The holiday season is here, and with it comes the temptation to indulge—and overindulge. Did you know the average American gains 1–8 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s? Those who are more fit hover closer to 1 pound, while others creep toward the 8–10 pound mark. Even more concerning? Holiday weight gain often accounts for 50% of the total weight gained annually, and most people never lose it.

 

So, what’s the game plan? Let’s explore some strategies to help you navigate the holidays without sacrificing your health or fitness goals.

1. Keep Moving

Missed the gym? No problem! A quick at-home workout—bodyweight squats, push-ups, or a short circuit—can still make a difference. Training for strength will preserve muscle, which is essential for keeping your metabolism humming.  I even have free, at-home workouts on my YouTube channel.

2. Watch Those Liquid Calories

Eggnog, cocktails, and sugary lattes can pack a calorie punch. Opt for lower-calorie alternatives or set limits on your indulgences.

3. Walk After Meals

A 10-minute walk after meals helps digestion, reduces cravings, and signals your body to use those calories for energy rather than fat storage.

4. Prioritize Protein

Start meals with high-protein options. Protein is satiating, helps curb cravings, and supports muscle growth, which boosts your metabolism.

5. Practice Calorie Undulation

Your body doesn’t operate on a 24-hour calorie clock. Reduce calories slightly earlier in the week or day, giving you some flexibility for holiday feasts.

6. Incorporate HIIT Workouts

A short HIIT session (10–20 minutes) once or twice a week can torch calories, especially if done in the morning before a big holiday meal.

While the holidays are filled with food, family, and fun, they’re also an excellent time to establish habits that can carry into the New Year. You don’t need perfection—just consistency. These strategies will help you enjoy the season while staying on track and set the stage for an incredible 2025! 💪🏼
