They’re Watching: The Power of Our Actions on Our Kids’ Health

Last week, I was reading a book with my 20-month-old grandson when I noticed something funny—he kept licking his finger. At first, I thought it was just a silly habit, but then I realized…

I was doing it. Every time I turned a page, I licked my finger.

He was copying me.

It was a simple but powerful reminder: kids soak in everything we do. The good, the bad, and everything in between.

And when it comes to health and fitness, the impact of what they see and hear from us is massive.

Why This Matters

Right now, more than 40% of adolescents are overweight or obese. 54% of childrenhave a chronic illness, from asthma to autoimmune diseases. 30% of teens are pre-diabetic. These numbers aren’t just statistics—they’re our kids’ futures.

But here’s the thing… We don’t fix this by “getting our kids in shape.” We fix it by being the example and fostering a positive relationship with food, movement, and health.

What NOT to Do

❌ Complain about working out. If we act like exercise is a punishment, kids will see it that way.

❌ Criticize our own bodies. Saying, “I look so fat in this old picture” teaches them to view weight gain as failure.

❌ Label food as “good” or “bad.” That piece of cake isn’t a sin—it’s just food.

What TO Do

✅ Be the example. Move your body, enjoy healthy food, and show them that self-care is normal.

✅ Make movement fun. Play tag, throw a ball, use bodyweight exercises, or a suspension trainer.

✅ Offer choices. Serve a protein, something they love, and something new at meals.

✅ Reduce screen time. Set limits and replace it with active play.

I didn’t get all of this right as a parent. I messed up—a lot. But I’m trying. And if we all make small, consistent efforts, we can change the trajectory of our kids’ health.

This picture? These are my three boys… long before they had beards and families of their own.

Let’s lead by example. They’re watching.❤️💪🏼😊
