Women & Stress & Hormones & Body Fat

Happy Mindset Monday! 😎

Should Women Practice Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent Fasting and Keto and two areas in which I get a ton of questions.

Skipping or dramatically delaying meals may be counterproductive for most women.

That’s because... Women might be more sensitive to calorie restriction.

Intermittent fasting involves shorter feeding windows (and longer periods of fasting), which means people usually eat less.

Turns out, women’s bodies more readily interpret missed meals and fewer calories as STRESS.

Further, fasting throws off a hormonal cascade that impacts reproductive hormones like testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone.

Fasting in women may upset female hormone balance, menstrual periods, ovulation, menopause symptoms, and metabolism.

Nutrient deficiencies, overexercising, mental / emotional stress, illness, or too little rest and recovery—can compound the negative effects of Intermittent Fasting.

Changes in reproductive hormones can also affect mood and thinking, digestion, recovery, protein turnover, bone formation, fat storage, and appetite.

The result?

Periods and ovulation can go awry, fertility can decrease, symptoms of menopause may worsen (or develop prematurely), libido can cool off, and metabolism might even decrease.

And if your goal is fat loss, this hormonal imbalance may actually cause you to GAIN body fat.

On the other hand, if it works for you – great.  But consider the potential negative ramifications.

And manage that stress! 💪🏼
