Work Hard and Love life:  Strategies to help with the holidays!

You have a holiday weekend coming up and you want to enjoy it – and you should enjoy it! I love my healthy and fit lifestyle, and I also love holidays especially summer holidays, in which I get to spend some extra time with my wife and boys.

With that being said, I don’t want to totally trash the gains I’ve made over the past few weeks so I’ve tried to come up with some “tips and tricks” to help me enjoy the holidays to the fullest, without getting too far off track from my health and fitness goals.

For me, I simply feel better when I eat healthy. And Melissa is still working through some health-related items coming off of chemo. It’s really important that she stays as consistent on her nutrition plan, as much as possible. With that in mind, just this morning we were talking about how we’re going to tackle this up-coming holiday and I thought I would share.

The main thing is that I think you should have a PLAN. Your plan may not be the same as my plan, but I will share a few ideas:

  • Melissa & I committed to being absolutely perfect on our nutrition plans between now and the holiday.
  • I want to make sure that I get all of my water in this week.
  • And crush all of my workouts, and really try to “earn” the celebration.
  • Plan for any schedule changes – gym closings and traveling

The day before the big holiday celebration, I really try to get in a little bit of an extra walk and stay super hydrated.

On the day of a big event, I try to do the following:

  • Pre-breakfast walk
  • Stay super hydrated
  • I adhere to my meal plan prior to heading out to a party and always try to eat something healthy before walking out the door to the event.

And now I just relax and enjoy that special time with family and friends!

  • I do try to make sure that I fill my plate with veggies and continue to drink water throughout the day.

I don’t freak out on the holidays when I consume extra carbs. Those carbohydrates will make you hold water so understand that the scale could pop up a few pounds in that one day. If you quickly get back on your nutritional plan, that additional water will be eliminated within 48 hours. I think that’s pretty key though… Just get back on your plan and you’ll be good to go!

Work hard and love life!
