My nutrition mistakes over the years – to help you progress faster towards your goals!

Here are some of the nutritional mistakes that I’ve made over the last 20 years. I just wanted to share these with you because I don’t want you to make the same mistakes - I want you to be the healthiest version of YOU and reach your goals as quickly as possible.

Too much time in a caloric deficit

Simply put, I spent too much time dieting. Whenever you restrict your calories, your body will down regulate to that number. At some point - and it’s probably sooner rather than later - you’ll need to increase your calories to “reset your metabolism”. The longer that you’ve been “dieting”, the longer you’ll need to “reverse diet”. (and it can be a tricky process.)

Not enough changes to my nutrition plan

I knew how many calories I needed. I had a good understanding of how much protein I needed. I wish I would’ve spent more time experimenting with different ratios of carbohydrates and fats.

Too much cardio

I thought cardio was the way to get leaner. I was wrong! Doing cardio did help me to lose fat, but I lost muscle also - slowing down my metabolism. Doing cardio just made me a smaller, softer version of myself. It did not significantly alter my body composition - and wasted a lot of time.

Not enough “good” fats

Ahh, this was a big one for me. About five years ago I started to incorporate more “good fats” into my daily nutrition. These came in the form of olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, nuts such as almonds and macadamia nuts, and almond butter, to name a few. Almost immediately I started feeling better and started to drop body fat. These good fats are so critical for your hormonal health!

Supplements

The best supplement is “consistency”, but supplement companies can’t make money off of your consistency. Don’t put so much stock into supplements. Most of them do very little unless you have some nutrient deficiency. Eat healthy, train hard, and be consistent with your efforts!

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are not the enemy. If your goal is to get leaner, you need the energy from carbohydrates to do so. Understand how different carbohydrates affect your body, and also understand the timing of these carbohydrates (when they will have the most positive impact in guiding you towards your goals.)

Salt

I did a whole video on this one. A few years ago I started adding a quarter teaspoon of pink Himalayan sea salt to my gallon of water every day. It was absolutely the best “bang for the buck” nutritional change that I’ve made ever. Like carbohydrates, salt is not the enemy. Give it a try!
